This article talks about a warning message "The track(s) ... of the composition seem(s) to be a combination of chord and melody parts. .." shown when opening a project in Liquid Notes.

Quick Answer: Split each of the listed tracks in your sequencer into separate chord and melody tracks for Liquid Notes to be able to perform the harmonic analysis and avoid problems at reharmonization.

Combination of chord and melody parts

Whenever you open a project in Liquid Notes, the track type classification determines the different instruments and their role in the song, whereas the harmonic analysis identifies all correlations of notes between each other, define chord boundaries, etc., all over your entire MIDI arrangement.

The track type classification plays an important role also for reharmonization of your arrangement. Melody, chords and bass lines all are treated differently during reharmonization, each with their own rules (respectively algorithms). Read more about this in this FAQ -

Hence, Liquid Notes requires a 'clean' arrangement to apply those ReHarmonization settings to. Should your track(s) contain both melody and chord parts, a warning message is shown when opening the project:

This is because ideally melody and chords are reharmonized differently to achieve optimal results from a music theory perspective. Additionally, Liquid Notes' harmonic analysis works most accurate if there is at least one chord track in your project.

Splitting tracks into melody and chord parts

To prevent running into this error and being subject to not optimal musical results, you have to split those tracks identified in the warning message into melody and chord parts in your sequencer.

Follow these steps to split tracks:
  1. Add a new MIDI track in your sequencer. Leave the melody-like notes in one track, and copy the chord-like notes to the other, as shown in the following example:

    (Track A)

Initially, melody and chord notes are contained in the same track (yellow color).
  2. Now, create a new track, and either move the melody or chord notes into it:‚Äč

(Track A, with melody notes removed!)

(Track B, now containing the melody notes!)

  3. Export the new arrangement and open it in Liquid Notes.

This procedure ensures that melody and chord parts are split into separate tracks. No more warning message will be shown by Liquid Notes, and the track type analysis will label the new track accordingly when opening the project.
